Sarah M. PADDOCK (1835-1919) was the daughter of Tristam PADDOCK and Charlotte PALMER. She was the sister of Mary, Ellen and Phebe, and Johanna, the wife of Samuel L. ROYALTY featured in earlier posts.
Sarah was the unwed mother of John M. PADDOCK (1851-1925) who lived with his grandparents in 1860, 1870, and 1880 in Union County, Indiana. Sarah married Job HARRIS (no record found) and was enumerated in his household in 1870 in Randolph County, Indiana, with their son Elisha B. born in May 1870 per census. This son was seen as Arthur HARRIS on the 1880 census and when he married in 1892. The HARRIS family may have been photographed in 1885 and will be discussed in a future post. Sarah remarried in 1894 to Elisha BRACEY. Was it only a coincidence she named a son Elisha B. in 1870 and married a man named Elisha BRACEY in 1894?
She had her picture taken (early 1890s) about the same time as her sisters Ellen and Phebe. She wore a dress similar to theirs, only the ruffled collar with a bow was different from the lacy collar seen in Ellen and Phebe’s portraits.

Opening Doors in Brick Walls 
Whew, it had to have been difficult to be a 16-year-old single mother in the 1800s. Now that I’ve written the previous sentence, I realize that I’m making an assumption that it was hard. It would be interesting to know more details about her life.

I am not related to the Paddock, Palmer, and Royalty families but the photographs make them so interesting. And yes I’ve also thought it would be great to know more details about their lives. They would make for an interesting historical novel.

Donna, please do not attach this photo to your Mary Paddock 1782-1862 who married Whippy. This photograph was taken in the 1890s and is of Sarah M. PADDOCK (1835-1919). I thought at first you were commenting on another picture of her sister Mary who died in 1855. Even this young lady’s photo cannot be your Mary as she was in her twenties. This type of photography had not yet been invented in 1805 when your Mary would have been the same age. Further, your Mary lived and died in Massachusetts. This picture was taken in Indiana. I think it was possibly the enumerator that put in his own name. If you look at the top right corner of the census, the ass’t marshal’s name is Elisha B . Elisha Bracey was from New York and served in the Civil war from that state, so I don’t think there is any earlier connection between Sarah and Elisha Bracey. I could be wrong though…

Are you a descendant of Arthur? or of one of his ancestors? I have not looked into Arthur closely. At the time I wrote the post I found a possible second marriage for him which included a son named Claude. If you are a descendant of Arthur, was my identification of this photo correct? Arthur is my Great Grandfather. He had 2 daughters by his first marriage and 3 daughters and one son from his second marriage. I am descended from his one son Claude A Harris. My father’s name is Arthur C Harris.

Arthur is my Great Grandfather. He had 2 daughters by his first marriage (her name was Cora Buckingham of Union City, IN) and 3 daughters and one son from his second marriage (Nellie Harrison of KY). I am descended from his son Claude A Harris. My father’s name is Arthur C Harris. I do have another photo that is supposed to be of Job and family, but I have not been able to authenticate it. My father was too young to remember his grandfather (he was an only child) and anyone else would have passed quite some time ago. The people look very similar just 10/20 years older.

Just a quick note on Job Harris. The Harris family were Quakers and are well documented in the Quaker Meeting records. Job was the son of David Harris and Mary Mace, Davids parents were Jesse Harris and Mary Johnson and Jesse’s parents were George Brinn Harris and Anne Williston. The earliest records indicate that the Harris family came to Indiana from Carteret County, NC. George was first mentioned in the 1750 Quaker records of NC. Jesse and family first located in Wayne County, IN and later generations relocated into Randolph County, IN. To date I have not connected to any Harris’s via DNA further back then George. However, I have connected to the Williston family further back then Anne, George’s wife. I am beginning to wonder if George was actually a Harris.
