Holiday Traditions – The First Sunday of Advent

The first of December and the first Sunday of Advent came around faster than expected this year. My followers may have been wondering why it’s been so quiet on my blog. I’m working on a genealogical problem I hope to soon reveal and haven’t had much inclination to write my usual posts on families I research. In the meantime, I’m going to write a few short posts about the holiday traditions we follow in the Meder-Dempsey family.

I’ve shared photos of our Advent wreath on each of the four Sundays of Advent on my Facebook timeline for the past seven years.

This morning we lit the first candle on the wreath and shared the photo on Facebook. We’ve been choosing wreaths or making them ourselves since we were first married. We added to the tradition when we began posting photos on the four Sundays for our friends who enjoy seeing a quiet reminder of the holiday season.

May the peace of Advent be with you and your families.

  1. Cathy, Holiday and family traditions are a great way to mark the holidays in the memory of your family members. My family began a Christmas Eve tradition of exchanging 1 gift with 1 family member by pulling names from a hat. My mother would create a buffet in our dining room and then invite others outside of our family to join us throughout the evening (neighborhood friends and friends from church). It was a tradition that has stayed in my memory all this time. I love the Advent wreath tradition. I am planning a special blog for the holidays. Brian

      1. There are so many different cultures and faiths with winter solstice holidays and festivals built around the theme of light in these darkest times, both literally and figuratively.

  2. I’m glad I’m not the only one who feels like December rolled around much faster this year! I love the idea of all the varying types of Advent wreaths. I’ve stuck to the same one for years. Maybe it is time to venture out and try something new.

    1. The one from 2014 was my Mom’s and she gave it to us when she got a new one. I still have it in the attic and sometimes use as a hanging wreath without the candles.

Time has been flying by. I felt bad about not keeping up with my blog posts but the puzzle I’m working on can’t be rushed. Thanks, Linda.

  3. Lovely variety and so creative! I never thought of making a new and different one each year. We are Lutheran but also use the Advent Wreath in our church every Sunday before Christmas as well.
