52 Ancestors: #22 Writing the Weckering Family Story with Missing Pieces

The Short Story

Pierre WECKERING was born on 12 June 1752 in Brandenbourg, Luxembourg.[1] He married Margaretha LASCHEID before 1780. Margaretha was born about 1753 in Niederschlinder. Pierre and Margaretha had the following children.

  1. Antoine “Anton” WECKERING was born on 1 July 1781 in Unterschlinder.[2], [3] He married Marguerite MÜLLER (1773-1841), daughter of Nicolas MÜLLER and Marie Cathérine COLLING, on 8 February 1799 in Vianden.[2] Marguerite died on 7 April 1841 in Lipperscheid.[4] She gave him seven children, two are known to have died young. Antoine also married Margaretha BERNARD, daughter of Pierre BERNARD and Antoinette GROEBER, on 30 May 1843 in Bourscheid.[3] She gave birth to six children, only one lived to adulthood (my children’s 3rd great-grandmother). Antoine WECKERING became the father of his 13th child at age 72! He died on 25 March 1857 in Hoscheid.[5] His second wife Margaretha died on 15 April 1878 in Ettelbruck.[6]
  2. Michel WECKERING was born on 7 December 1781 in Schlindermanderscheid. He was baptized on 8 December 1781 in Brandenbourg. His godparents were Michel MERSCH and Maria SERRES. No trace of him has been found after his baptism.[7]
  3. Corneil WECKERING was born abt. 1786 in Niederschlindermanderscheid. He was never married and died on 16 January 1857 in Hoscheid.[8]

Margaretha LASCHEID, the mother of these three children, died in 1792 in Hoscheid.[2]

Pierre remarried after his first wife’s death to Margaretha KOENIG before 1797. Margaretha was born about 1767 in Michelau. Her parents are unknown. Pierre and his second wife, Margaretha had the following children

  1. Marguerite WECKERING  was born on 13 January 1796 in Hoscheid.[9] She never married but was the mother of a daughter born in 1819.[10] Marguerite died on 1 June 1864 in Hoscheid.[11]
  2. Theodore WECKERING was born on 27 April 1800 in Hoscheid.[12] He married Catharina HELLES (1802-1864) on 16 January 1826 in Wiltz.[13] They had at least 3 children born between 1827 and 1840 in Wiltz. Catharina died on 23 Mar 1864[14] and Theodore died on 13 June 1881[15], both in Wiltz.
  3. Theodore WECKERING was born on 2 January 1804 in Hoscheid.[16] He married Margaretha DUPONT (1802-1890) on 5 June 1828 in Ermsdorf.[17] They were the parents of at least 2 children born between 1834 and 1837 in Eppeldorf. Theodore died on 20 June 1867[18] and Margaretha died on 27 May 1890[19], both in Eppeldorf
  4. Nicolas WECKERING was born on 12 July 1808 in Hoscheid.[20] Nicolas married Anne Marie THURM (1812-1884) on 23 April 1834 in Hoscheid.[21] They were the parents of at least 9 children born between 1834 and 1854 in Hoscheid. Anne Marie died on 28 May 1884[22] and Nicolas died on 19 Mar 1892[23], both in Hoscheid.
  5. Anne Marie WECKERING was born on 1 January 1811 in Hoscheid.[24] She married Mathias MANGERS (1806-1874) on 20 October 1836 in Wilwerwiltz.[25] They were the parents of at least 8 children born between 1837 and 1853 in Enscherange. Mathias died on 18 February 1874[26] and Anne Marie died on 7 March 1877[27], both in Enscherange.
  6. Mathias WECKERING was born on 23 August 1814 in Hoscheid.[28] He married Marie WEIS (1819-1858)on 13 March 1844 in Wilwerwiltz.[29] They were the parents of at least five children born between 1844 and 1852 in Enscherange. Marie died on 18 May 1858 in Enscherange.[30] Mathias died on 1 December 1891 in Luxembourg City.[31]

Pierre WECKERING died on 17 March 1820 in Hoscheid.[32] His youngest child was only 5 years old when he died. His second wife Margaretha KOENIG died on 3 March 1849 in Hoscheid.[33]

The Longer Story Using Substitute Pieces of the Puzzle

Pierre WECKERING, a 5th great-grandfather of my children, very likely left a lot more records than I was able to find. His parents chose to live in Brandenbourg where his paternal grandparents had also lived. Normally research is simpler when families stayed in one location. However, the Brandenbourg parish records are in a muddle for many of the years Pierre lived there. To be more precise, from the time he was 12 years old until he turned 50. The period of his life when he married, had children, lost his first wife, married again, and had more children.

Cover Sheet of a Brandenbourg parish records collection [35]

I attended a lecture on Latin in the Luxembourg church records last Thursday. As I have been doing a lot of research in the church records this year, the information the lecturer shared was an eye-opener.

At the lecture I learned two copies were kept of the records by the priests of the parish. Where both copies were available, they were microfilmed by FamilySearch. This is helpful as the handwriting in one copy may be more legible than in the other due to fading or even those pesky mice who ate a whole through the surname of your ancestor.

Over the years, as the borders changed, some of the books were split up between the parishes in Luxembourg and those across the borders in France, Belgium, and Luxembourg. During the French Empire parts of Luxembourg belonged to France and church records for the years 1808-1810 may be found in the diocese of Metz, France.

There are also gaps in the record keeping. Some parishes were large and included several towns. The priests did not always carry their registers with them and made the entries later messing up the chronological order.

Other church records are lost forever. Destroyed by natural elements (insects, rats, dampness), hidden by the clergy, or, in some cases, torn out of the ledgers by people who stole the records or by others who had well-meaning reasons for making a record disappear.

No matter what the reason for the missing records, we are still able to write the stories of our ancestors with the remaining records.

The (Documented) Early Years

Pierre WECKERING (1752-1820) was born and baptized on 12 June 1752 in Brandenbourg. His parents were Michel WECKERING and his wife Anna Maria. His godfather was the Reverend Father Petro (Peter) WEISGERBER, a pastor in Aalschett (sic, Alscheid). His godmother was Maria Elisabeth DALEIDEN of Vianden.[1]

1752 Baptismal Record [1]

Some priests wrote short entries while others wrote up documents which filled one, two, and even three pages. Still, the compact and precise entries, when translated correctly, include more information than one sees at first glance.

In the above record, the abbreviation R:D: (reverendi domini) in front of the name of the godfather gives more precise information. Without this, a beginner would automatically translate the word pastore following the godfather’s name to shepherd as his occupation. In this case, Petro WEISGEBER was a Catholic priest in Alscheid. This detail was the key to opening the door in young Peter’s maternal line – to be written about in a future post.

We don’t do research in chronological order. We work backward, forward, and sideways to find the relevant information for each individual. In Pierre’s case, I knew the names of his parents as other researchers had made the connection. To confirm them, I searched for his baptismal record (above) and found it did not include his mother’s maiden name. The next step was to locate the baptismal records of his five known siblings, names and dates being provided by researchers who have their GEDCOM files online. [The names and dates found in other people’s files are used as clues and to assist in finding the records to prove the connection.]

After locating all of the baptismal records in Vianden, I took a closer look at each. Pierre’s three youngest siblings’ baptismal records included their mother’s maiden name: DALEYDEN. This was important as no marriage record was found for Michel WECKERING and Anna Maria DALEYDEN. The date of marriage is presently being estimated at before 1751, the birth year of the oldest known child.

It was interesting to hear the lecturer mention things I had already noticed. For example, the importance of the godfather and godmother in the baptismal record. A male child always received the name of the godfather and a female child that of the godmother. This rule is very useful when the priest omitted the name of the child on the baptismal record.

A closer look at the baptismal records of all six children of Michel and Anna Maria showed DALEYDEN/DALEIDEN individuals were acting as godparents for some of the children.

The (Undocumented) Middle Years

Pierre WECKERING was married twice. No marriage records were found. However, the records of his children have been helpful in proving his first wife was Margaretha LASCHEID (d. 1792) and his second wife was Margaretha KOENIG (1767-1849).

First Marriage and the Children

To prove the first marriage I searched for records documenting children born about 1780 to 1792. Important information was gleaned from the 1843 marriage record of my children’s 4th great-grandparents Antoine WECKERING and (his second wife) Margaretha BERNARD.

From the 1843 marriage record I learned:
1) Antoine was born 1 July 1781 in Unterschlinder.
2) Antoine’s mother was Margaretha LASCHEID who died in the year 1792.
3) Antoine’s father was Pierre WECKERING who died 17 March 1820.

To date, no death or burial entry has been found for the 1792 death of Margaretha LASCHEID. Only one baptismal record was found for a child born to Pierre and Margaretha. It, however, caused a conflict with the date of birth found for Antoine on both of his marriage records.

Michel WECKERING’s baptismal record [7]
At eight in the evening of 7 December 1781 Michel was born to Pierre WECKERING and Margaretha LASCHET (variation of the spelling of the maiden name) and was baptized the following day. His godparents were Michel MERSCH of Schlindermanderscheid and Maria SERRES of Hoscheid. One would imagine with the length of this baptismal record there would be many more details which could be used. The priest who entered the information was very specific about the places the parents were from including the town name, parish, Duchy of Luxembourg in the Archdiocese of Trier.[7]

The clergymen who wrote in the parish registers were not all accomplished Latinists and there is a marked difference between classical Latin and medieval Latin found in the church records of the 17th to 19th century.

Michel’s brother Antoine was born on 1 July 1781 per both of his marriage records. This was only five months before Michel was born. Antoine was underage when he married in 1799. Is it possible he was even younger? Was his birth date seen in the 1843 marriage record copied from the 1799 marriage record?

Corneil WECKERING, the third child of Pierre and his first wife, showed up in the Luxembourg census for the years 1843, 1846, 1847, 1849, 1851, 1852, and 1855 with his half-sister Margaretha. The age range seen for Corneil on the census suggested he was born before Margaretha LASCHEID died. Although I searched and searched through the Brandenbourg church records, I did not find a baptismal record for Corneil. His death in 1857 was reported by his half-sister Margaretha’s son-in-law and included the names of his parents: Peter WECKERING and Margaretha LASCHEND, a variation on the spelling of LASCHEID or LASCHET.

Second Marriage and the Children

Pierre’s marriage to Margaretha KOENIG is well documented even without a record of marriage. The marriage records of four sons and a daughter all include the names of both parents, Pierre WECKERING and his wife Margaretha KOENIG. They also document the dates of birth for these five children.

Birth or baptismal records were not found for all of the children. Their oldest daughter Margaretha and first son Theodore were born during the time period the Brandenbourg church records are deficient. Their son Nicolas and daughter Anne Marie were born during the years for which the church records ended up in Metz and the civil records are also lacking. Only their second son Theodore and youngest son Mathias had civil birth records.

The date of birth of the oldest daughter Margaretha, who never married, cannot be documented with a reliable record. The census records found for her show she was born 13 January 1796 (1843), 3 November 1802 (1846), or 6 January 1800 (1849). The first appears to be the most likely as her siblings were born with 3-4 years between each. In 1851 she was seen as 52 years old when her illegitimate daughter married. At the time of death in 1864 her age was 58 which would place her birth at abt. 1806. Although I don’t trust the age to be correct on the record, the informant, her son-in-law, knew her parents were Peter WECKERING and Margaretha KOENIG.

I am comfortable with the research done to prove the mothers of the children of Pierre WECKERING. I still need to investigate the parentage of his first wife Margaretha LASCHEID who was the 5th great-grandmother of my children. Preliminary searches for the surname LASCHEID did not turn up any other persons with the name. However, I have a tiny hope of perhaps finding her parents as a baptismal record turned up for Maria Catharina LASCHET, daughter of Nicolas LASCHET and Catharina MEYERS, born 22 February 1753 in Schlinder(manderscheid) with godparents Joannes MERSCH of Schlinder and Maria Catharina BINSFELD of Hoscheid. I may be analyzing godparents as Michel MERSCH was the godfather of Michel WECKERING, the only child of Pierre WECKERING and Margaretha LASCHEID for whom a record was found. Coincidence?

52 Ancestors: #36 The GRISIUS-SCHAEFFER Family – Working for a Living

Week 36 (September 3-9) – Working for a Living: September 7 is Labor Day in the United States. Write about an ancestor and his or her occupation.

Father and Son Were Cow Herders

cowsA cow’s milk will spoil if she does not want to stand during milking. Fixation does not always work. An easier way is to dip a large piece of linen in cold water and drape it over the cow’s back, she will then stand up for milking. ~ advice seen in 1841 in the Diekircher Wochenblatt, a weekly publication.

My husband’s 3rd great-grandfather Frederich GRISIUS (1805-1852) more than likely learned this trick from his father. Frederich and his father Mathias (1776-1846) were both cow herders (Khehirt, Küh Hirt, vaché). They were illiterate and in all records found, could not sign their names. The tricks to their trade were learned by watching and doing and not by reading about it in a farmer’s almanac or other guide.

How do I know this was their occupation?

certificateWhen Frederich married in 1833 the supporting documentation for his marriage included the above document signed by the mayor stating the groom did not owe taxes or have any other income other than what he made working in his occupation as a cow herder (vaché). Due to his low income he was allowed to produce civil records without a tax stamp. This was the only document found for Frederich which states his precise occupation. In all other civil and census records he was seen only as a day laborer.

publicationIn the publication of the marriage banns, Mathias GRISIUS, the father of the groom, was listed as Kühhirt or cow herder.

The GRISIUS-SCHAEFFER Family

Frederich GRISIUS, son of Mathias GRISIUS and Magdalena SCHAETTER, was born on 9 March 1805 in Alscheid/Alschette, Canton de Wiltz, Grand Duché de Luxembourg.[1],[2] He died on 16 December 1852 in Hoscheid-Dickt, Hoscheid.[3] Frederich married Catherina SCHAEFFER, daughter of Nicolas SCHAEFFER and Theresia GREISCH, on 3 July 1833 in Hoscheid.[4],[5],[6] Catherina was born on 14 April 1815 in Eschdorf, Wiltz.[7] She died on 16 January 1898 in Hoscheid-Dickt.[8]

They had the following children.

  1. Mathias GRISIUS was born on 29 September 1835 in Hoscheid-Dickt.[9] He died on 13 December 1835 in Hoscheid-Dickt.[10]
  2. Franz “François” GRISIUS was born on 30 March 1837 in Hoscheid-Dickt.[11] He died on 18 February 1901 in Schlindermanderscheid.[12] Franz married Catherine KOOB on 7 February 1859 in Hoscheid.[13] Catherine was born on 1 December 1839 in Alscheid.
  3. Heinrich “Henri” GRISIUS was born on 25 June 1839 in Hoscheid-Dickt.[14] He died on 14 October 1904 in Hoscheid-Dickt.[15] Heinrich married Marie Mangers, daughter of Mathieu MANGERS and Anne Marie WECKERING, on 8 November 1860 in Wilwerwiltz.[16] Marie was born on 13 Jan 1837 in Enscherange.[17] She died
on 2 Jan 1871 in Hoscheid-Dickt.[18] Heinrich also married Elisabeth “Elise” WECKERING, daughter of Antoin “Anton” WECKERING and Margaretha “Marguerite” BERNARD, on 29 October 1874 in Hoscheid.[19] Elisabeth was born on 9
    May 1853 in Hoscheid.[20] She died on 14 February 1905 in Hoscheid-Dickt.[21]
  4. Petrus “Pierre” GRISIUS was born on 31 August 1841 in Hoscheid-Dickt.[22] He died on 22 January 1909 in Rodange.[23] Petrus married Susanne FABER, daughter of Nicolas FABER and Susanne POOS, on 5 February 1863 in Hoscheid.[24] Susanne was born on 16 May 1832 in Tadler.[25] She died on 29 February 1876 in Hoscheid.[26] Petrus also married Cathérine DOENER on 16 June 1876 in Hoscheid.[27]
  5. Margaretha “Marguerite” GRISIUS was born on 28 January 1844 in Hoscheid-
Dickt.[28] She died on 23 October 1877 in Kautenbach.[29] Margaretha had an illegitimate child before she married Gaspar KREMER on 1 August 1872 in Alscheid.[30] Gaspar was born on 10 July 1824 in Dasburg, Rheinland Pfalz, Germany.
  6. Bernardus “Engelbernd” GRISIUS was born on 10 April 1847 in Hoscheid-
Dickt.[31] He was not found with the family after 1852. Being quite young in age he may have died leaving no death record or died while visiting a friend or relative in another town.
  7. Anna Maria “Anne Marie” GRISIUS was born on 17 August 1850 in Hoscheid-
Dickt.[32] She died on 2 January 1915 in Hoscheid-Dickt.[33] Anna had an illegitimate child before she married Jean MAJERUS, son of Mathieu MAJERUS and Madeleine REITER, on 2 August 1876 in Hoscheid.[34] Jean was born on 27 November 1848 in Bockholtz sur Sûre, Wiltz.[35] He died on 21 April 1918 in Hoscheid-Dickt.[36]
  8. Pierre “Peter” GRISIUS was born on 25 August 1852 in Hoscheid-Dickt.[37] He died on 22 December 1917 in Hoscheid-Dickt.[38] Pierre married Susanne ZENNER on 18 Oct 1873 in Clervaux.[39] Susanne was born on 3 January 1846 in Urspelt, Clervaux.[40] She died on 25 April 1924 in Esch-sur-Alzette.

The WIRTZ-SCHAEFFER Family

Catherina SCHAEFFER also married Nicolas WIRTZ, son of Anne Marie WIRTZ, on 30 November 1855 in Hoscheid.[41] Nicolas was born on 19 March 1833 in Weimerskirch. He died on 16 July 1882 in the Central Hospiz in Ettelbrück.[42]

Catherina and Nicolas had one child, Hubertus “Hubert” WIRTZ born on 22 December 1856 in Hoscheid-Dickt.[43] Hubert married Margaretha HOPP on 19 July 1876 in Hoscheid.[44] Hubert and his wife were last seen in the 1880 census with their first born.

The mother of these families, Catherina SCHAEFFER outlived two husbands dying in 1898. Even though I found all of her GRISIUS children in 1887, 1890 and 1895, I did not find Catherina or her WIRTZ son. If she was not with her youngest son, she could be in any household in Hoscheid-Dickt were she lived and died.

Some Thoughts….

The research for these families is time consuming. As I worked on the GRISIUS-SCHAEFFER family I realized I miss being able to take the time to analyze all the records and search for the missing ones as I did before I began blogging.

I am proud of having found the birth records of all 9 children, death records of 7, marriage records of all who married and those who married twice, nearly all census records for the period between 1843-1900. I cannot work on a family group without looking into the parents and the grandchildren. I added about 200 source citations for this family and still have census work which needs to be finished and cited. A week is hardly enough time to do this much research. Without the routine I now have in searching Luxembourg records I doubt I would be able to do as much.

I realize by restricting my posts for the 2015 edition of 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks to my husband’s and my families in Luxembourg I am losing the interest of my readers. I am following the plan until the end of the year. Please continue to drop by and read or even skim through my posts – you never know, you might one day find you also have ancestors from Luxembourg.

52ancestors-2015This is my weekly entry for Amy Johnson Crow’s challenge:
52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks – 2015 Edition. It was so successful in 2014 that genealogists wanted to continue or join in on the fun in 2015. Be sure to check out the other great posts by visiting Amy’s blog No Story Too Small where she’ll be posting the weekly recap on Thurdays and allowing all participants to leave a link to their post(s) in the comments.

52 Ancestors: #19 The Heinrich GRISIUS Family of Hoscheid-Dickt

Week 19 (May 7-13) – There’s a Way: What ancestor found a way out of a sticky situation? You might also think of this in terms of transportation or migration.

Instead of an ancestor, I was the one who had to find a way out of a sticky situation. I think everyone has a family similar to the one I researched (again) this week. A family you keep coming back to but push away until later because of the amount of work required or not knowing where to look. There’s a way I usually do my research and there’s a way to take a short cut. I had to use both approaches before I could begin to write about this family.

I spent hours searching the census and civil records of Luxembourg for my husband’s great-great-grandfather Heinrich GRISIUS, his two wives, and thirteen children. This is my usual way of doing Luxembourg research as none of the records are indexed. You won’t find shaky leaves on Ancestry for records in Luxembourg. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t other sites that are helpful.

Rob Deltgen, who is well known to anyone researching families in Luxembourg, shares his work online. Rob’s site is the oldest and most visited genealogy site in Luxembourg and the short cut I used. [Access to the site is free but you need to register and login with a password.]

I went through the children and grandchildren of the GRISIUS family checking the dates and places Rob had with the online records at FamilySearch. Since Rob does not cite his sources online this is a good exercise in searching for records in browse only collections and comparing the information.

The reason I included grandchildren in this project was due to the time period. The GRISIUS chidren lived longer than the records are available on FamilySearch – 1922. The National Library of Luxembourg has the newspapers online. Obituaries may contain names of children but not always names of siblings. The grandchildren’s names make the search easier. But not all families published obituaries in the newspapers.

The GRISIUS-MANGERS and the GRISIUS-WECKERING Families

Heinrich “Henri” GRISIUS was born 25 June 1839 in Hoscheid-Dickt, Commune of Hoscheid, Canton of Diekirch, Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. His parents were Frederique “Friedrich” GRISIUS (1805-1852) and Catherina SCHAEFFER (1815-1898). They named him Heinrich per his birth record.[1]

Heinrich married his first wife Marie MANGERS on 8 November 1860 in Wilwerwiltz in the canton of Wiltz.[2] Marie gave birth to four children:

  • Ch 1: Michel GRISIUS (1861-aft. 1900) born 19 September 1861 in Hoscheid-Dickt[3]
  • Ch 2: Anna Marie GRISIUS (1864-1921) born 3 March 1864 in Hoscheid-Dickt[4]
  • Ch 3: Cathérine GRISIUS (1866-1927) born 16 Jun 1866 in Hoscheid-Dickt[5]
  • Ch 4: Elisabeth GRISIUS (1870-1871) born 10 June 1870 in Hoscheid-Dickt[6]

Heinrich’s first wife Marie died on 2 January 1871.[7] Six days later the baby Elisabeth GRISIUS died on 8 January 1871.[8] Both deaths took place in Hoscheid-Dickt.

In December 1871 Heinrich, a widower, was seen on the census with his three young children: Michel 10, Anna Marie 7, and Cathérine 5. He did not have anyone in the household to help with the children.[9]

Heinrich waited a few more years before marrying again.  On 29 October 1874 he married Elisabeth WECKERING (1853-1905) in Hoscheid.[10]

Elisabeth was born 9 May 1853 in Hoscheid to Antoin WECKERING and Margaretha BERNARD. Her father was 72 years old and her mother 36 years old.[11] Her parents had been married 10 years and had buried 5 children during that time. Elisabeth was the only child of this couple to reach adulthood.

Elisabeth and Heinrich had nine children in 18 years:

  • Ch 5: Marguerite GRISIUS (1875-1913) born 28 August 1875 in Hoscheid-Dickt[12]
  • Ch 6: Nicolas GRISIUS (1877-1939) born 14 August 1877 in Hoscheid[13]
  • Ch 7: Cathérine GRISIUS (1879-1918) born 7 September 1879 in Hoscheid-Dickt[14]
  • Ch 8: Cathérine GRISIUS (1881-1938) born 25 December 1881 in Hoscheid-Dickt[15]
  • Ch 9: Mathieu GRISIUS (1883-aft 1912) born 5 December 1883 in Schlinder-Haut[16]
  • Ch 10: François GRISIUS (1885-1946) born 22 December 1885 in Hoscheid-Dickt[17]
  • Ch 11: Martin GRISIUS (1888-aft. 1900) born 15 August 1888 in Hoscheid-Dickt[18]
  • Ch 12: Léonard GRISIUS (1891-aft. 1923) born 2 March 1891 in Hoscheid-Dickt[19]
  • Ch 13: Nicolas GRISIUS (1893-aft.1934) born 22 September 1893 in Hoscheid-Dickt[20]

While Elisabeth was pregnant with her 6th child (Heinrich’s 10th) her stepdaughter Anna Marie was also pregnant and had to get married. Anna Marie married Michel BURGEN on 18 May 1885 in Hoscheid[21] and the first grandchild Anne BURGEN (1885-1937) was born on 10 July 1885.[22] Three more children were born to this couple and each time the child’s surname was spelled differently: Angelica Bürgen 1891, Georg “Joseph” Burghen 1899, and Susanna Birchen 1904.

Heinrich’s second daughter Cathérine GRISIUS married Albert MEYER (1863-1928) on 1 March 1889 in Bastendorf.[23] Their first child Marie was born on 31 December 1889 in Weidingen les Wiltz.[24] She was followed by (another) Marie 1893, Anne 1897, Elisabeth 1901, Michel 1904, Nicolas 1906 and Catharina 1908.

Heinrich and Elisabeth’s oldest daughter Marguerite married Dominique DONNER on 25 February 1895[25] in Hoscheid three weeks after giving birth to a son they named Henri after her father.[26]

Heinrich’s oldest child Michel GRISIUS married Elisabeth JAEGER on 31 January 1898 in Wiltz.[27] He was 36 and she was 47. It is not known if the couple remained in Wiltz were they were seen in the 1900 census. No children were found in that community and it is not very likely that his wife had a child at her late age.

To make things a bit more difficult Heinrich named three of his daughters Cathérine. On census listings they were all seen with the same first name.

1885census
1 December 1885 Census[28]
1887census
1 February 1887 Census[29]
Because of this naming pattern in the family it is important to read the marriage records closely to see which of the three daughters named Cathérine married which men. Marriage records include the dates and places of birth of the bride and groom making it easier to keep the girls apart.

The first daughter named Cathérine b. 1866 married in 1889 as seen above. The two others married in 1900 and 1902:

  • Cathérine GRISIUS (b. 1879) married Nicolas KREMER (1875-1951) on 28 November 1900 in Bettendorf.[30] They were my husband’s great-grandparents.
  • Cathérine GRISIUS (b. 1881) married Edouard DAUBACH (1880-1948) on 26 December 1902 in Hoscheid.[31]

Heinrich “Henri” GRISIUS died on 14 October 1904 in Hoscheid-Dickt[32] and was followed by his wife Elisabeth “Elise” WECKERING four months later on 14 February 1905 in Hoscheid-Dickt.[33]

When Heinrich and Elisabeth died their six sons were not yet married. Marriages were found for all of them except Martin.

  • Nicolas GRISIUS married Susanne JACOBY on 6 January 1909 in Heiderscheid[34]
  • Mathieu GRISIUS married Susanne Cathérine SCHNEIDER 20 July 1909 in Boulaide[35]
  • François GRISIUS married Marie Sophie WIEGAND on 7 February 1911 in Diekirch[36]
  • Léonard GRISIUS married  Madeleine Susanne LEINENWEBER on 11 April 1913 in Wiltz[37]
  • Nicolas Grisius married Mathilde REUTER on 4 July 1920 in Bissen[38]

Before the last son married the two oldest daughters of Heinrich and Elisabeth died. Marguerite on 8 June 1913 in Luxemburg City[39] and Cathérine GRISIUS (b. 1879) in childbirth on 19 April 1918 in Moestroff.[40]

It is not known when Heinrich’s oldest daughter Anna Marie GRISIUS died. She was last seen alive in November 1921 when her youngest child married.[41]

Cathérine GRISIUS (b. 1866) died 3 October 1927 in Weidingen.[42]

Nicolas GRISIUS, the youngest child of this family, became a father on 28 February 1934.[43] It is not known how long he lived.

Cathérine GRISIUS (b. 1881) died before 31 May 1938, the date her son Marcel died. His obituary lists only his father and siblings.[44]

Nicolas GRISIUS died 26 March 1939 in Weidingen.[45]

François GRISIUS died 16 November 1946 in Bettendorf.[46]

The research on this family was time consuming but it was a good feeling to be able to work on a family with thirteen children and find that only one died at a very young age. Eleven of the twelve children married and had children giving Heinrich and Elisabeth 55 grandchildren.

52ancestors-2015This is my weekly entry for Amy Johnson Crow’s challenge:

Be sure to check out the other great posts by visiting Amy’s blog No Story Too Small where she’ll be posting the weekly recap on Thurdays and allowing all participants to leave a link to their post(s) in the comments.
