The Ancestors: Nicolas Traudt and Maria Barbara Bill of Vianden

On Sunday, 22 January 1747, a young couple was married in Vianden, Luxembourg.

The marriage of Nicolas TRAUDT and Barbara BILL was recorded in the Vianden church register volume 2 page 105. It was the first entry for the year 1747.1

Nicolas TRAUDT was 25 years old. Barbara BILL, his bride was 23. The entry in the church register of Vianden included the names of their fathers, Henri TRAUDT and Theodor BILL.2 The three lines give no additional information not already abstracted on the marriage index card.

The mother of the groom was Margaretha HEICKEL.3 The mother of the bride was only known as Maria.4 These names were not mentioned in the marriage record.

The children of Nicolas TRAUDT and Maria Barbara BILL

Nicolas and Barbe made their home in Vianden where all of their children were born. Nicolas made his living as a clothes tailor or tailleur d’habits.

Henri TRAUDT was born on 24 February 1748.5 He was listed as Nicolas Henri TRAUDT on the 1766 census.6 No marriage or death record has been found.

Nicolas TRAUDT was born on 13 January 1750.7 He was living at the time of the 1766 census. No marriage or death record has been found.

Théodore TRAUDT was born on 11 March 1752.8 He died on 11 October 1785 at the age of 33.9 He married Susanna WAGENER on 27 April 1777 in Vianden.10 Like his father, he was a clothes tailor.

Maria Magdalena TRAUDT was born on 17 June 1754.11 She married Michel WIRTZ on 13 May 1776.12 They were both living in January 1793 when their 8th child was born.13

Barbe TRAUDT was born on 19 March 1757.14 She died in der Unterstadt on 14 January 1794 at the age of 36.15 She married Johann MANDT on 7 April 1777 in Roth.16 They were the parents of nine children, all born in der Unterstadt.

Michael TRAUDT was born on 25 Jan 1759.17 He may have died before 1766 as he is not included in the household of Nicolas and Barbe in 1766.

Maria TRAUDT was born on 20 September 1761.18 A daughter named Anna Maria was with Nicolas and Barbe at the time of the 1766 census. No marriage or death record has been found.

Elisabeth TRAUDT (speculation!) was enumerated with Nicolas and Barbe on the 1766 census. She was listed in the under 14 years column. A baptismal record for this child needs to be found to prove she was a child of this couple with this name. It may have been an error on the census and meant to be Maria Clara, the next child born to the couple.

Maria Clara TRAUDT was born on 2 April 1764.19 She was not listed on the 1766 census with her parents although she is known to have lived. She married Jean METZ in Vianden on 6 May 1787.20 They had children who have not been researched. Clara died on 18 February 1828 at the age of 63.21

Margaretha TRAUDT was born on 8 August 1766.22 She died at the age of 43 on 30 November 1809.23 She married Jean-Népomucène SCHLOESSER (1764-1833) on 26 April 1790 in Vianden.24 Margaretha and Jean-Népomucène were my 4th great-grandparents.

Nicolas is widowed and remarries

After 22 years of marriage and giving birth to nine children, Barbe died on 18 May 1769 at the age of 45.25 Nicolas remarried on 1 October 1769 to Barbara KÖNIG.26 They did not have children. Nicolas died on 19 April 1799 in Vianden.27

I used the Familienbuch von Roth / Vianden 1718-1797 as a guide for this family. The family book includes the register number, page number, and entry number of church records (baptism, marriage, burial) of Vianden and Roth used by the compilers to determine the family groups. Vianden records are online at FamilySearch. The records for Roth are indexed on FamilySearch but access in Europe is limited to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Kirchenbuch, 1718-1900 (Katholische Kirche Roth (Kr. Bitburg).

A bit of history: Grafschaft Vianden

I wasn’t able to find records for individuals in this family group who were born, married, or died in der Unterstadt of Vianden. I had to study the history of the Grafschaft Vianden or County of Vianden to understand where the records were recorded.

Vianden lies on the Our River that divides the city into the upper town (on the left) and lower town (on the right).

During the Middle Ages, the fortified city of Vianden was the capital of the County of Vianden and included villages as far as Prum and Bitburg in present-day Germany. The county was as large as the present-day Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

In the first half of the 13th century, the Count of Vianden donated the parish church of Roth, the adjacent building, and land to the Order of the Templars.

In the middle of the 13th century, a dispute between the Templar knights and the Count of Vianden had to be settled by arbitration of the Archbishop of Trier. The Trinitarian monks ran the hospital for the count and had started building a church with a monastery and churchyard across from the hospital. This did not bode well with the Templars as Vianden was affiliated to the Templar parish of Roth as the city did not have its own church.

The city of Vianden was a divided city with a lower town (in der Unterstadt) and an upper town. Although residents of both sections of the town had the same rights, the lower town was more of a secondary town. This became more clear with the settlement of the dispute.

The dispute was resolved by attaching the lower town to the parish of Roth and creating a new parish assigned to the Trinitarian monks in the upper town.

The Templars built a small chapel on the parish boundary near the bridge in 1256 to accommodate the disgruntled lower town dwellers. The residents in der Unterstadt had to make do with a chapel with an open roof for their Sunday services.

They were, however, required to celebrate holidays (Christmas, Easter, Pentecost) as well as the sacraments of baptism, the first communion, and marriage at the church in Roth. They have to trek down and up to the church to attend these high masses as well as transporting the corpses of their deceased to the Roth churchyard for burial.

Thank you to my husband

We have two routes on our riding itinerary that take us through Roth, one on the German side and the other coming into Roth from the Luxembourg side.  My husband and I rode our bikes through Roth on Tuesday in search of the church and castle. I had located them on the map, off our usual paths.

I didn’t realize that the buildings were located on the top of a wooded hill. The road up to the church is not well paved and the last piece was a 17% climb. My husband rode to the top while I had to walk my bike for the last part. It was worth the effort. The photos of the church and castle are my husband’s contribution to this post. Villmols merci.

52 Ancestors: #21 The Schaeffer-Greisch Family of Eschdorf

Earlier this week I wrote Lëtz Play! Can You Top This? A Marriage Record With 15 Events in which I shared the marriage record[1] of my children’s sixth great-grandfather Jean Baptiste SCHAEFFER (1752-1819). It was a second marriage for both the bride and groom. Jean Baptiste was first married to Catherine SCHAACK (1752-1801). Nicolas SCHAEFFER was their first known child. I doubt he was their first born as they were married 9 February 1777 in Heiderscheid[2] while Nicolas was not born until 14 July 1783 in Merscheid.[3] I’ve found four of his siblings, all born later and in Merscheid, but the search for older siblings is still underway.

Nicolas SCHAEFFER was twenty-six years old when he married the twenty-nine years old Theresia GREISCH on 19 February 1810 in Esch.[4] The bride and the groom were working as day laborers at the time of their marriage. Nicolas was living in Merscheid and Theresia in Eschdorf. The groom and his father and the bride and her mother left their mark on the marriage record.

The marriage took place in Esch, today known as Esch-sur-Sûre in the northwestern part of Luxembourg. It is not to be confused with Esch-sur-Alzette in the southwestern part of the county. Nicolas and Theresia are one of the many sets of fifth great-grandparents in my children’s family tree.

Theresia GREISCH was the first child of Nicolas GREISCH (1759-1803) and Susanne ROLLINGER (abt. 1757-1819). She was born on 24 May 1781 in Eschdorf,[4] ten months after her parents married on 11 July 1780 in Wahl.[5]

Theresia’s place of birth is, as yet, undocumented. She had at least six siblings, five born in Eschdorf, and one in Brattert. Baptismal records have been found for these children. At the time of her marriage, Theresia’s place of birth was given as Eschdorf. When she died the informant gave Wahl as her place of birth. Three census listings were found, each has a different place of birth: Eschdorf, Wahl, and Dellen. For the time being, I will list the date and place of birth found in the 1810 marriage record[4] but will continue to search for a baptismal record to confirm or refute the date and place.

UPDATE (13 June 2017): Linda, a Luxembourg researcher who has helped me out several times during this year’s 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks series of posts, located the missing baptismal record for Theresia GREISCH in Wahl. She was baptized on 17 April 1781 and was born the previous day.

At the time of their marriage, both Nicolas and Theresia had lost one parent. Catherine SCHAACK, Nicolas’ mother, died on 28 November 1801 in Merscheid[6] while Nicolas GREISCH, Theresia’s father, had died on 21 January 1803 in Eschdorf.[7]

Brothers marry Sisters

Three months after Nicolas and Theresia’s marriage, his brother Jean Pierre married her sister Catharina on 22 May 1810.[8] Catharina was in a family way when the marriage took place as five months later, on 10 October 1810, a son was born.[9] Wouldn’t it be interesting to learn how they met and who knew whom first? 

The SCHAEFFER-GREISCH Children

From the different records found I believe the SCHAEFFER-GREISCH couple remained in Eschdorf during their entire married life. All of their children were born in this small town.

  • Ch 1: Bernard (1811-?) was born on 8 August 1811.[10]
  • Ch 2: Marguerite (1813-1815) was born on 15 September 1813.[11] She lived less than a year and a half, dying on 16 March 1815.[12] Her mother was pregnant with her third child at the time of Marguerite’s death.
  • Ch 3: Catherina (1815-1898) was born 14 April 1815.[13] She was my children’s fourth great-grandmother.
  • Ch 4: Susanne (1818-1863) was born on 31 March 1818.[14] She was a twin.
  • Ch 5: Marguerithe (1818-1818) was born on 31 March 1818.[15] She was Susanne’s twin and lived only nine days, dying on 9 April 1818.[16]

In 1819 the children Bernard, Catherina and Susanne lost the only grandparents they ever knew. Their maternal grandmother Susanne ROLLINGER died on 15 May 1819 in Eschdorf[17] and their paternal grandfather Jean Baptiste SCHAEFFER died on 22 November 1819 in Bourglinster.[18]

  • Ch 7: Catherina (1823-?) was born 7 December 1823.[20]

No trace of the oldest child and only son, Bernard, or the youngest daughter, Catherina, has been found. Of the seven children born to Theresia and Nicolas, only three are known to have survived to adulthood.

Three Daughters Marry

The oldest living daughter Catherina SCHAEFFER married Frederich GRISIUS (1805-1852) on 3 July 1833 in Hoscheid, Kanton Vianden, Luxembourg.[21] Their story was told in 52 Ancestors: #36 The GRISIUS-SCHAEFFER Family – Working for a Living.

Susanne SCHAEFFER, the next oldest daughter, was the next to marry. She married Jean BERTHOLET (1812-1864) on 17 May 1841 in Mecher, Wiltz, Luxembourg.[22]

The youngest of the three living daughters, Elisabetha SCHAEFFER married Thomas JUSTE (1816-1883) on 28 Jan 1843 in Heiderscheid, Wiltz, Luxembourg.

I had to do a lot of browsing to learn more about Susanne and Elisabetha. With only their marriage records, I wondered where I would be able to find them after the events.

I looked into Elisabetha first. Her husband was from Nothomb, a small village in the commune of Attert, in the Province of Luxembourg in Belgium. At the time of their marriage, he was living in Heiderscheid (Luxembourg). Not finding any immediate trace of them there, I took a chance with the FamilySearch records for the Province of Luxembourg in Belgium. I located birth records for eight children born between 1848-1867 in Parette, a village in the commune of Attert, as well as death records for four children who died in the 1850s. But I still had a large gap between 1843 when they married and 1848 when their first child was born in Belgium.

I then checked for Susanne whose husband was born in Holtz in the commune of Perlé in western Luxembourg near the Belgium border. Jean BERTHOLET was living and working in Béiwen (Bavigne) when they married. Béiwen was in the commune of Mecher in Luxembourg where I found their sad story. Susanne gave birth to at least five daughters. Sadly, the first died before the birth of the second, the second before the third, and the third before the fourth. Then the fifth also died after only three months. Only the fourth daughter, Anna born in 1854 lived. However, the question remains, how long? Susanne died in 1863 and her husband in 1864 leaving Anna an orphan. She may have lived with her uncle Johann MERSCH (who had married her father’s sister) immediately after her father’s death but this is not definite as the child seen on the 1864 census in his household was named Susanne, an 11-year-old servant girl. By 1867 a very young Anna BERTHOLET, 14 years and 2 months, was working as a servant for an unmarried female farmer, Anna Catherine PROBST in Béiwen. No trace has been found of her after 1867.

Once I knew more of each of the daughters I came back to Nicolas and Theresia to see how their lives continued after their daughters married.

On 14 December 1843, a peculiar census[24] was found for Nicolas SCHAEFFER. He was living in Eschdorf which was expected. By this time, his daughter Catherina was well established in Hoscheid with her husband Frederich GRISIUS and their three young sons. Elisabetha had been married less than a year and as mentioned above, missing during this time period. Daughter Susanne, her husband Jean BETHOLET, and their daughter Elisabetha were living in Nicolas’ household. The daughter’s birth record has not been found but her presence was not unexpected as I had found her 1845 death record in the commune of Mecher. Also on the census sheet was Theresia GREISCH, Nicolas’ wife and mother of Susanne, but her name was crossed out. Was she away from home, perhaps visiting with Elisabetha who has not been located?

On 6 December 1846[25] and on 31 December 1847[26] Nicolas and Theresia were the only persons in his household in Eschdorf.

On 19 December 1846 Elisabetha and Susanne, both married, were found with their husbands in the BERTHOLET-LINDEN household, Susanne’s parents-in-law, in Bavigne. Each had a daughter.[27]

Theresia GREISCH died on 26 May 1848 in Eschdorf.[28] Her husband Nicolas was not found on the 1851 or 1852 census. He died 10 April 1855 in Eschdorf.[29]

Seven months after her father died, Catherina who was widowed in 1852, remarried. The 40 years old bride married Nicolas WIRTZ, a 22 years old young man, on 30 November 1855 in Hoscheid.[30]

Susanne SCHAEFFER who had been living in Béiwen (Bavigne) died on 25 June 1863.[31] She left a husband and daughter.

Elisabetha SCHAEFFER died on 19 November 1882 in Aubange.[32] She appears to have been visiting with her son, a butcher, who declared the death. It was recorded in the Aubange register[32] as well as the Attert register[33] as this was her normal residence. She left a husband Thomas JUSTE who died the following year on Christmas Day.[34] The four sons who may have continued the JUSTE line have not been researched.

Catherina SCHAEFFER, my children’s ancestress, died on 16 January 1898 in Hoscheiderdickt. at the age of 82 years.[35] She outlived her young second husband who died in 1882[36] after nearly 27 years of marriage.

I’m glad I took the time to research this family further. Although it was sad to find so many small children’s deaths, it was satisfying to be able to learn more of Catharina’s parents Nicolas and Theresia and her sisters Susanne and Elisabetha.

52 Ancestors: #36 The GRISIUS-SCHAEFFER Family – Working for a Living

Week 36 (September 3-9) – Working for a Living: September 7 is Labor Day in the United States. Write about an ancestor and his or her occupation.

Father and Son Were Cow Herders

cowsA cow’s milk will spoil if she does not want to stand during milking. Fixation does not always work. An easier way is to dip a large piece of linen in cold water and drape it over the cow’s back, she will then stand up for milking. ~ advice seen in 1841 in the Diekircher Wochenblatt, a weekly publication.

My husband’s 3rd great-grandfather Frederich GRISIUS (1805-1852) more than likely learned this trick from his father. Frederich and his father Mathias (1776-1846) were both cow herders (Khehirt, Küh Hirt, vaché). They were illiterate and in all records found, could not sign their names. The tricks to their trade were learned by watching and doing and not by reading about it in a farmer’s almanac or other guide.

How do I know this was their occupation?

certificateWhen Frederich married in 1833 the supporting documentation for his marriage included the above document signed by the mayor stating the groom did not owe taxes or have any other income other than what he made working in his occupation as a cow herder (vaché). Due to his low income he was allowed to produce civil records without a tax stamp. This was the only document found for Frederich which states his precise occupation. In all other civil and census records he was seen only as a day laborer.

The GRISIUS-SCHAEFFER Family

Frederich GRISIUS, son of Mathias GRISIUS and Magdalena SCHAETTER, was born on 9 March 1805 in Alscheid/Alschette, Canton de Wiltz, Grand Duché de Luxembourg.[1],[2] He died on 16 December 1852 in Hoscheid-Dickt, Hoscheid.[3] Frederich married Catherina SCHAEFFER, daughter of Nicolas SCHAEFFER and Theresia GREISCH, on 3 July 1833 in Hoscheid.[4],[5],[6] Catherina was born on 14 April 1815 in Eschdorf, Wiltz.[7] She died on 16 January 1898 in Hoscheid-Dickt.[8]

They had the following children.

  1. Mathias GRISIUS was born on 29 September 1835 in Hoscheid-Dickt.[9] He died on 13 December 1835 in Hoscheid-Dickt.[10]
  2. Franz “François” GRISIUS was born on 30 March 1837 in Hoscheid-Dickt.[11] He died on 18 February 1901 in Schlindermanderscheid.[12] Franz married Catherine KOOB on 7 February 1859 in Hoscheid.[13] Catherine was born on 1 December 1839 in Alscheid.
  3. Heinrich “Henri” GRISIUS was born on 25 June 1839 in Hoscheid-Dickt.[14] He died on 14 October 1904 in Hoscheid-Dickt.[15] Heinrich married Marie Mangers, daughter of Mathieu MANGERS and Anne Marie WECKERING, on 8 November 1860 in Wilwerwiltz.[16] Marie was born on 13 Jan 1837 in Enscherange.[17] She died
    on 2 Jan 1871 in Hoscheid-Dickt.[18] Heinrich also married Elisabeth “Elise” WECKERING, daughter of Antoin “Anton” WECKERING and Margaretha “Marguerite” BERNARD, on 29 October 1874 in Hoscheid.[19] Elisabeth was born on 9
    May 1853 in Hoscheid.[20] She died on 14 February 1905 in Hoscheid-Dickt.[21]
  4. Petrus “Pierre” GRISIUS was born on 31 August 1841 in Hoscheid-Dickt.[22] He died on 22 January 1909 in Rodange.[23] Petrus married Susanne FABER, daughter of Nicolas FABER and Susanne POOS, on 5 February 1863 in Hoscheid.[24] Susanne was born on 16 May 1832 in Tadler.[25] She died on 29 February 1876 in Hoscheid.[26] Petrus also married Cathérine DOENER on 16 June 1876 in Hoscheid.[27]
  5. Margaretha “Marguerite” GRISIUS was born on 28 January 1844 in Hoscheid-
    Dickt.[28] She died on 23 October 1877 in Kautenbach.[29] Margaretha had an illegitimate child before she married Gaspar KREMER on 1 August 1872 in Alscheid.[30] Gaspar was born on 10 July 1824 in Dasburg, Rheinland Pfalz, Germany.
  6. Bernardus “Engelbernd” GRISIUS was born on 10 April 1847 in Hoscheid-
    Dickt.[31] He was not found with the family after 1852. Being quite young in age he may have died leaving no death record or died while visiting a friend or relative in another town.
  7. Anna Maria “Anne Marie” GRISIUS was born on 17 August 1850 in Hoscheid-
    Dickt.[32] She died on 2 January 1915 in Hoscheid-Dickt.[33] Anna had an illegitimate child before she married Jean MAJERUS, son of Mathieu MAJERUS and Madeleine REITER, on 2 August 1876 in Hoscheid.[34] Jean was born on 27 November 1848 in Bockholtz sur Sûre, Wiltz.[35] He died on 21 April 1918 in Hoscheid-Dickt.[36]
  8. Pierre “Peter” GRISIUS was born on 25 August 1852 in Hoscheid-Dickt.[37] He died on 22 December 1917 in Hoscheid-Dickt.[38] Pierre married Susanne ZENNER on 18 Oct 1873 in Clervaux.[39] Susanne was born on 3 January 1846 in Urspelt, Clervaux.[40] She died on 25 April 1924 in Esch-sur-Alzette.

The WIRTZ-SCHAEFFER Family

Catherina SCHAEFFER also married Nicolas WIRTZ, son of Anne Marie WIRTZ, on 30 November 1855 in Hoscheid.[41] Nicolas was born on 19 March 1833 in Weimerskirch. He died on 16 July 1882 in the Central Hospiz in Ettelbrück.[42]

Catherina and Nicolas had one child, Hubertus “Hubert” WIRTZ born on 22 December 1856 in Hoscheid-Dickt.[43] Hubert married Margaretha HOPP on 19 July 1876 in Hoscheid.[44] Hubert and his wife were last seen in the 1880 census with their first born.

The mother of these families, Catherina SCHAEFFER outlived two husbands dying in 1898. Even though I found all of her GRISIUS children in 1887, 1890 and 1895, I did not find Catherina or her WIRTZ son. If she was not with her youngest son, she could be in any household in Hoscheid-Dickt were she lived and died.

Some Thoughts….

The research for these families is time consuming. As I worked on the GRISIUS-SCHAEFFER family I realized I miss being able to take the time to analyze all the records and search for the missing ones as I did before I began blogging.

I am proud of having found the birth records of all 9 children, death records of 7, marriage records of all who married and those who married twice, nearly all census records for the period between 1843-1900. I cannot work on a family group without looking into the parents and the grandchildren. I added about 200 source citations for this family and still have census work which needs to be finished and cited. A week is hardly enough time to do this much research. Without the routine I now have in searching Luxembourg records I doubt I would be able to do as much.
