Caroline “Carrie” ENOCH was the youngest daughter of Ellen ROYALTY (1824-1903) and Hananiah R. ENOCH (1823-1902) of Ohio County, Indiana. She was born about 1862.
Two copies of the same photograph dated 1892 were included in this collection. One was marked on the back To my Uncle Sam and the other, To my cousin Tillie. In a different handwriting on the back of the photos were, what may have been, her married name. LANGLEY or LANGSTON.
I have not been able to confirm either spelling of her married name. I have not found Carrie in the 1880 census, she would have been about 18 years old, or later.
My friend Dawn Williams-Kogutkiewicz of Dawning Genealogy looked up the will of Hananiah R. Enoch. Only his wife Ellen is mentioned.
Any takers on finding Carrie?

Opening Doors in Brick Walls 
Since these photos were both taken and sent and inscribed at the same time, the two different surnames make no sense. She had to be either Langley or Langston—not both, right? That is really confusing. What else could it refer to? Is either surname in the family at all? What a mystery!

Also, I think the handwriting is the same on the back. What made you conclude it was different?

Langley and Langston seem to have been added later, not by Carrie, and most likely by two different persons. Carrie’s handwriting is the same on both just not the two names. Thanks for the input. 🙂

Also on the right card Wells was added below Tillie’s name, also in a different handwriting than Carrie’s. I have no idea how many hands these photos have gone through and who added things. I’m going to have to lay them all out on the table and compare all the handwriting.

One of the names doesn’t look like a C, maybe a B. Could that be why the different last name? Have you contacted local genealogy libraries in Ohio Co., in Ind? They might find family names and someone searching this line?

Thank you Jeanne. It is Carrie on both. The one on the right looks like she set her pen down too quickly and made a mark up before starting the C.
Carrie was the first cousin of the wife of my 2nd cousin 3 times removed.
I haven’t contacted any local institutions for help as, for now, I’m only sharing the photos.

I found the 1900 marriage certificate on familysearch and put it on your facebook entry. I think what occurred is what happened to me when my Aunt Micky retold that my Uncle Danny visited the Rooney’s and Dole’s in San Francisco in 1943 on his way to the Pacific. She was in her 70’s and it drove me nuts until I discovered it was Doyle only after I got a hold of one of the Crosby clan from the marriage of Catherine Rooney and John or James Crosby. It appears to me that she was (or he) was recollecting something from way back. Francis E. Land was the hubby.

And then I see her hubby Francis Land, shoemaker like her father, (maybe took over the store?) died in 1925. She then remarries a Charles F Miller in 1928.

One last thing (hah!) about these photographs are the years subtracted on the back. I have a hazy recollection of my Mom and Dad doodling with photographic dates and things, but these pictures probably were in Florence Royalty’s possession. But maybe you can figure out what was going on. I see the 14 above 1955 which is above the 1892 and underneath is 55.
Oh! This cousin sets a record, having lost 17 years upon her marriage to Francis Land, My previous record was ten years, but that also included a then unknown previous marriage in Ireland
